Running To a Better Year

Early morning, Monday/Rosh Hashanah. The air is refreshingly cool, reminding me of the autumns I grew up with, the more distinct and divided seasons found North of the Mason-Dixon. I put Dov and the foster dog on a leash, laced up my shoes, and set out for a run.

I'm still not a good runner. But when I remind myself that running time can be reflection time, thinking time, self-care time, my feet start moving. And while my physical pace is pretty slow, my mind runs marathons, forward and back.

This time, as I started running and reflecting on transitions and new beginnings, I began to think about the things I run from, and perhaps more importantly, what exactly it is I want to be running toward in the days and weeks and year ahead. So these are my resolutions, the things I want to run directly toward in the coming year.

I want to run to help, even if the terrain ahead looks rough.

I want to run toward health, and in that way, help myself.

I want to run toward honesty, because any other direction helps no one.

I want to run toward something better, because I won't get there standing still.

Deep breath. Stretch. Start out slow, build up speed, and don't stop running 'til I get where I need to go.

L'shana tova.
